Seven of Wands
Wands — Minor Arcana

Detailed Interpretation
On the whole, it is a favorable card, although it speaks of a clash with unfavorable influences, such as someone's ill will. It does not promise cloudless prosperity, but it guarantees success in a struggle achieved through courage and determination.
On the one hand, it heralds "troubles" - in the sense that there is a difficult situation, possibly someone's interference in our personal affairs, an "opposition campaign," an attempt to deprive us of something or prevent us from achieving something. Someone "forces" us to defend our positions and our territory. Perhaps someone is envious, offended, or encroaching on something that belongs to us. It warns of a worsening situation, the presence of difficulties, opponents, and competitors, but also of brilliant chances for victory.
This is a card of eliminating rivals, in business and in love. Even if it seems that superior forces are attacking, the Seven of Wands clearly states that the advantage is on the side of the querent. This card appears when some forces appear on the horizon, seeking to knock us off course in some sense (the surrounding cards can suggest which aspect of life is involved). It urges us to stand up for what we believe in and what we consider valuable. It advises against making concessions or betraying our principles. Sometimes its appearance reports that only by taking a truly desperate step can a hopeless case be won.
This is a card of resilience in adversity, a challenge to battle and overcoming obstacles, firmness, bravery, and victory. In the Arcana, a person holds a wand, as if defending himself, standing on the edge of a pit from which six more wands rise to meet him - it seems they are held by enemies ready to attack him. But the pit is deep, and they cannot get out of it. One way or another, they cannot harm him. This card says that the danger is there in principle, and it is quite real, but in this particular case, nothing threatens you, so act more boldly. In a reversed position, the forecast is rather negative (the enemies will climb out of the pit and beat you).
Traditional meaning: argument, scandal, debate, discussion, gossip, rumors... in a word, squabbles of all sorts, but usually the victory belongs to the querent. Their arguments are stronger and their position is more advantageous. Modern interpretations emphasize the fact that to achieve goals and realize plans you will have to sweat a lot, but in themselves, they are quite feasible.
If there are positive cards in the spread, we can confidently state that the querent will benefit from the situation they find themselves in; everything will turn out in their favor. If the querent is faced with a problem (and since this card appeared, it is most likely so), the Seven of Wands says that they have the skills, knowledge, and capabilities to do everything right in this difficult situation. In Philadoro we read: "Important and interesting situations are approaching! Solving these problems forces us with renewed vigor to surpass ourselves."
It is important to understand that the Seven of Wands in a spread often indicates not so much the problem as the RESOURCE of the querent. Guggenheim writes: "The card reflects an enduring determination, thanks to which the predicted defeat can turn into a brilliant triumph." In general (and especially in the presence of positive cards in the spread) - moving forward, success. A suitable time for a risky game; you can count on luck. Overcoming doubts and obstacles, including internal ones, as well as the end of competition and victory.
The Seven of Wands in a spread is a sign of upcoming difficulties, but these difficulties will by no means always entail any problems. Rather, these changes will bring a lot of interesting things into life and lead to an overall improvement in the situation, provided other cards in the spread do not contradict this.
Occasionally, and surrounded by appropriate cards, we are talking about a physical attack. If the question is not about an individual, but about a group or community, then the upright Seven of Wands can also mean injuries and casualties, although there will not be many in comparison with the total number of people in this community.
"No retreat, no surrender." The Seven of Wands brings courage, determination, readiness to enter a conflict, self-confidence, and assurance of success. This card always emphasizes the conviction of being right. Sometimes even one man is an army - it all depends on the characteristics of the battlefield.
The person of the Seven of Wands resists the external world in one form or another. This can be defending their ideas in skirmishes with opponents, sports competitions, or fighting off suitors. They cope with rivalry, confrontation, and other problems with the help of perseverance and self-control, although perhaps "if only this energy were used for peaceful purposes."
They usually have a keen sense of their superiority over other people - mental, physical, financial, professional, or otherwise. It happens that they intentionally surround themselves with people of a lower level of development in order to feel more confident (in the manner of well-known dictators, who by definition did not tolerate associates with a more developed intellect). It happens that the person of the Seven of Wands denies spiritual values and prefers to rely entirely on their dexterity, ingenuity, combat skills, and other elements of the lower will.
This person extremely dislikes yielding to others in anything and prefers under all circumstances to have the last word (Watson's phrase from the "Sherlock" series comes to mind: "He would outlive God just to have the last word!"). The Seven of Wands is stubborn and does not intend to surrender their positions. "No pasaran." "They shall not pass."
This is a master of "putting out fires" caused by their own short-sightedness. A pile-up of life problems due to a lack of systematic action is a familiar situation for them. Usually, they masterfully "clear the debris" and "sort out problems," the only trouble is that they themselves create all this! However, it could just be a person for whom competition, risk, clashing with some difficulties, and the need to "rush into battle" (sometimes quite literally) is a common thing. Their huge plus is courage. This person will not be at a loss in the face of danger. They are also not afraid to object and express their own opinion. This does not make them convenient, but it makes them valuable - yes, and sometimes gives them a special appeal.
Sometimes the person of the Seven of Wands resembles a bulldozer - they sweep away everything in their path and unwittingly bring to mind various proverbs ("All brawn and no brains" and "If only this energy were used for peaceful purposes"). At the same time, they are capable of self-overcoming, dedication, and heroism, and do not yield to any pressure. It is practically impossible to intimidate them. Such a person is a nightmare for any dictator or ringleader.
The keyword of the card is CONVICTIONS, VALOR.
On a deeper level, it describes a difficult, lonely path of ascent, accomplished with enormous confidence and strength. The one who makes it is a pioneer, not an exile, and climbs to the top out of their own calling. They rise above what is left below. This is a struggle against the dominance of lower aspirations (of spirit against matter), which are so great that there is no time to study a tactics textbook - just quick actions and courage are needed, and the person boldly turns to face the challenge thrown at them.
They have the courage to follow their impulse and act, giving their "all"; they will reach their destination and know where it is. This person has nowhere to retreat, there is no way back, and if they stumble, death awaits them. A small hesitation, a slight betrayal of oneself and one's convictions is certain defeat. This is a battle, a true bellum sacrum, and the enemy's strength may be superior. "The symbol of treasure" - the inner power of a person's thought is such that it resurrects them.
The third decan of Leo symbolizes courage, responsibility, and the ability to work hard for the chosen goal. Achieving energy balance provides the necessary amount of strength so that any, even the most complex individual goal of a person can be realized. The ruler of this decan - the planet Mars (or, according to new interpretations, Pluto) speaks of the inner leadership qualities of a person and the ability to mobilize others to work for the sake of common goals, which prompted them to go out into the unbroken ground.
The negative quality of Pluto is demandingness. A leader whose task is not easy is sometimes prone to making excessive demands on people, on the "masses," which they view as a part of themselves. The ability to manage oneself and others is achieved by relying on the knowledge of natural laws - an understanding of life as it is, and the ability to coordinate one's activities with the simple demands of comfort and the beauty of existence, ensures the victory of a rational plan. Mars in Leo symbolizes the courage of a warrior in the face of superior forces. On a subtle level, this card is a symbol of prayerful action, "prayerful warfare," and all types of astral battles with demons (an example could be exorcism).
Light and shadow (advice and warning)
Advice: fight and do not surrender. Stand up for yourself. Cast aside doubts and hesitations. Boldly get down to business, even if it seems almost hopeless. Do not retreat from your position on matters of principle; wage a righteous struggle. Work hard to achieve your goals, despite fears, disappointments, and obstacles. Stick to the chosen strategy and maintain the conviction that you are right, even if the majority does not support you. If you believe the old interpretations, the card may indicate a suitable time for a risky game (including for money). It advises gathering strength and uncompromisingly going all the way through all the trials that fate has prepared.
Warning: clearly not the time for heroism, quarrels, attempts to "stand on principle," and winning back your share. Now, more than ever, the wrong choice of priorities and an incorrect sequence of actions, in which forces are wasted, are dangerous. A feeling of superiority in a situation or primacy over a certain group of people can be deceptive. Perhaps it makes sense to yield to others in something. The time and energy spent on confrontation and struggle could be spent on much more productive things.
The Seven of Wands patronizes mainly individual projects, or those where a relatively small group of people has to solve all problems on their own. This Arcana involves resolutely defending one's own plans and interests (for example, when faced with criticism or a lack of funds for business development).
Systematic activity, a lack of doubt in the correctness of one's actions, readiness to overcome obstacles, implementation of intended plans, self-belief. This is a card of victory, social success, and moving forward, despite obstacles. Energy and enterprise are directed to all kinds of projects related to creativity, organizing spectacles, and show business. This is a card of creativity, inspiration. At the same time, this card can signal the development of professional skills in one form of art or another, for example, music; it can also serve as an indication of an assessment to which skills are subjected.
Under the Seven of Wands, you can take part in competitions or defend your point of view during public debates. It generally corresponds to situations of negotiations, conferences, academic defenses, meetings, and symposiums. In the case of an exam or the defense of a thesis for an academic degree, it is a good sign for the querent.
This is a card of a "transitional period," when you need to be prepared to hastily change many plans, and to throw some away entirely as unnecessary. At the same time, the card portends success in business. Efforts to hold one's ground will prove successful (if other cards in the spread do not contradict this too much). Victory in competitive struggle. Completion of some important part of the work. Intense hard work, solving complex problems. Going beyond previous limits. Risk, performing difficult tasks. Success achieved through courage.
This card symbolizes the choice of one's own sphere of life and activity and leadership in an area not mastered by others (especially if it is the study of something beyond, some secret invisible connections, other worlds, the search for an answer to very important questions). A person selflessly devotes themselves to work on uncultivated land, and can count on success.
This card promises promotion, successful advancement on the career ladder.
According to it, various confrontations are possible, but the querent has an excellent opportunity to emerge victorious in them. Sometimes - the need to defend one's reputation, withstand speculation and gossip in the team, and fight against being undermined. Under this card, a person has every chance to defend themselves, their business, and their place in the sun.
Interestingly, in some interpretations, this card is associated with an active passion for esotericism and an indication of professional activity related to the occult.
This is a card of profit and benefit, traditionally corresponding to trade and commerce. In some old interpretations, this card is called the "symbol of treasures". Modern interpretations, however, boil down to the fact that to make a profit, you will have to make a lot of effort. But with careful planning of your actions, everything will work out, although the income will most likely not be particularly large.
Often this card indicates a difficult period of a desperate struggle for a relationship that is threatened by something and needs to be "saved." There is a kind of duel (although most likely implicit). The person described by this card feels in trouble, but knows they have a chance to win and does everything to avert the threat of a breakup. Usually, possessive feelings are heightened, along with a clear understanding of the advantages of one's position, be it the position of an official partner, a "sponsor," the spouse who holds sway behind closed doors, or something else.
The character on the card has mobilized all their strength to protect a love that is under obvious threat. They intend to resolutely and stubbornly defend their positions, defend their right and their interests, and remain in a state of high tension. They feel challenged to a battle, anxiously feeling the "transitional" nature of the stage (and when cohabitation will take complete forms is unknown).
The Seven of Wands can mean that the relationship has in one form or another "come under attack" (these can be envious people, parents, rivals of both sexes, and so on), nevertheless, this card shows good chances for preserving them and "repelling the attack." This is an attack from a defensive position.
The person described by the Seven of Wands is uncompromising and stubborn, compromises are not their element, they want to insist on their own way in literally everything. Surrounding cards can suggest how appropriate this is and what it will lead to, but generally, this is not the best mindset for harmonious relationships. This person can be hot-tempered, authoritarian, and assertive to the point of recklessness. This card is certainly not safe for their rivals - they will get their feathers plucked. Sometimes the Seven of Wands describes strong pressure from a partner (or - upon them).
Falling to a single person, the Seven of Wands can report that they are the "architect of their own fortune" - diligently defending against any potential partners and refusing to enter into intimate relationships on principle, residing in voluntary isolation. How good this position is for the overall course of their life can be suggested by other cards, but usually under it, no one's attempts to pull the person out of their self-sufficiency are "considered in any way at all." This is an individualist, accustomed to always and in everything relying only on their own strength and consciously "clearing" their living space from intrusions.
This is a specialist at saying "no" and sitting in deep defense. The position of the character on the card elevates them above everyone and helps them stay separate from the surrounding world. Partners are viewed either as unworthy or as potentially threatening to life safety. Other cards can suggest the reason for this. If a person was once attacked and badly burned, it is not surprising that they are defending themselves and are "once bitten, twice shy." This card of fighting for oneself, protecting one's boundaries, and resisting external influences falls to people who resist marriage (the Four of Pentacles in this case will be particularly revealing).
A married person, according to this card, can show resilience, fighting off temptations (the presence of The Devil in the spread will be indicative). If no such influences are traced, then this is a card of an absence of love and harmony in the couple.
The body is subjected to some test of strength but successfully resists pathogenic factors. This is a card of good immunity. But in a reversed position, the meaning, alas, changes to the exact opposite. This can be an excessive production of some substance in the body, hormonal and endocrine disorders. Mary Greer points to obsessive-compulsive behavior, obsessive-compulsive neurosis.
There are different interpretations of the reversed Seven of Wands. Some argue that it is not the time to philosophize; you must act, casting aside hesitation, and it is better to do something poorly than not at all. The situation is such that even incorrect actions are better than no action. Insecurity, incompetence, doubts, suspiciousness, and hesitation (as well as frivolity and carelessness) become the cause of losses (including financial ones). Confusion, chaos, turmoil - including in matters of love. Loss of chances due to hesitation and indecision. Lack of self-belief. In fact, this card means that a person's courage has failed them. Under the reversed Seven of Wands, we find ourselves unable to resist the pressure of other people.
Others say that in a reversed position, the card symbolizes carelessness, an unwillingness to concentrate too much on this or that problem, avoiding everything gloomy, dull, excessive (Libra). The appearance of the card in a spread can mean the "unbearable lightness of being." Or it will be a period of hesitation, reflection, or maybe, on the contrary - of "super-intensified" activity. At the same time, there is an opinion that under this card no efforts yield the desired result.
Most likely, it indicates insecurity, a precarious situation. A dispersion of forces, an inability to choose the right strategy and prioritize - also. Lack of breakthrough power. This is a card of a person who is confused, who has lost the right direction, the ground under their feet. They no longer believe in what they are doing. It seems to them that they have no reason to behave firmly and confidently. The card can also symbolize a lack of inspiration, and energy wasted, and talents used inappropriately, and simply failures.
The simplest practical interpretation of this card is that the conflict of interests comes to naught, the confrontation weakens.
An interesting old meaning of the card is an awkward situation, an unwanted meeting, forced contacts. Passive-aggressive behavior. The position of a victim, fright, confusion. Encountering slander, harassment, or betrayal.
Pollack notes that the reversed Seven of Wands in a spread is advice to moderate aggression, especially when it comes to relationships.
With The High Priestess – hidden aggressiveness With The Hierophant - traditionally it is considered that this combination speaks of matchmaking and marriage With The Hanged Man – defiant behavior, the role of an oppositionist in society With The Moon – concealing intentions With Five of Wands – strengthening the meaning of battle, confrontation With Nine of Wands – also strengthening the meaning; defending one's position, asserting one's opinion With Five of Swords – opposing oneself to everyone With Two of Pentacles – inciting discord With Three of Pentacles – great disagreements Reversed to the right of Three of Cups – fire (from an old interpretation book).
