Chakra frequencies in Hz: two charts that don't agree

There are two systems of “chakra frequencies”, and they do not agree on a single number. The first is planetary, built into Acutonics tuning forks. The second is the “solfeggio” list, which has nothing to do with Acutonics. Both are given in full below, so you can see exactly where they part ways.

Tradition

The “chakra ↔ planet” correspondence is Cousto's system, not a measurement: that is how it is printed in his brochure. The frequencies themselves are real: each one except the Sun tone is calculated from a period and can be checked.

Color in this subject is not one thing at all but THREE independent systems, and they get mixed up all the time. The first is the color computed from the frequency by carrying it up into visible light — that is the one in the table above. The second is the paint on the metal of the tuning fork, chosen by the maker — it is in the frequency chart, and it rarely matches the computation (the Om tone computes as blue-green, yet it is painted gold). The third is this rainbow chakra scheme.

The rainbow set of seven is not ancient: it was published by Christopher Hills in 1977, which makes it the same age as the “solfeggio frequencies” discussed below; in tantric texts the colors are entirely different. The “computed” color comes from carrying the frequency itself into the range of visible light. The two schemes agree in only two rows out of seven, and elsewhere they part ways: the heart is green by the rainbow but blue-green by computation; the third eye is indigo by the rainbow but yellow-orange by computation. Both systems are internally consistent — they are simply different systems, and they cannot be merged into one table.

Myth

This is about where the list came from, not a claim that this music should not be listened to.

The list is usually presented as “the ancient frequencies of Gregorian monks”. That is impossible, and for a stronger reason than people usually give: it is not about the word “hertz” (a unit by that name was adopted in the 1930s) but about the fact that there was nothing to count from. No common pitch standard existed either in the Middle Ages or in the nineteenth century — the familiar A = 440 Hz was adopted by international agreement only in 1939. Choirs sang from whatever pitch the choirmaster gave.

In fact the list was put together in the 1970s by Joseph Puleo, who applied numerological reduction to the text of the Book of Numbers. That does not make the music any worse: it is pleasant to listen to, and nobody disputes that. But it is “ancient” exactly to the extent that the year 1974 is ancient.

Which system should I choose if I want to try?

If you work with Acutonics tuning forks, the planetary one: it is built into the instruments, and physically you have no other. If you simply listen to music “by frequency”, take whichever you like, but do not mix them: a table that assigns both 194.18 and 396 Hz to the root chakra does not unite two traditions — it simply loses both.

Why does Venus have two chakras?

Because these are two different constructions, not two versions of one. In Cousto's system the correspondence is one-to-one: one planet, one chakra, and Venus is given to the third eye — that is how it is printed in the brochure. In Acutonics, a chakra is matched with a SET of planets and intervals: Venus appears in the sets for the root, sacral, throat and brow chakras, and in the heart chakra in pairs with Mars and with Jupiter. The school singles out the throat on its product pages, hence the articles about “Venus in the throat”; but that is one line out of five, and the school has kept the third eye as well. More on the Venus page.

Do chakras have a measurable frequency?

No. Chakras are a concept of tradition, not of anatomy: they cannot be shown on a scan or measured with an instrument. Frequencies are assigned to them through a system of correspondences. That does not make the practice pointless — meditation with attention to the body works regardless of what the points of attention are called — but the statement “the heart chakra has a frequency of 136.10 Hz” belongs to tradition, not to measurement.
