Heavenly stem and earthly branch of the hour
In the Eastern tradition, the day is divided into twelve two-hour periods (時辰, shichen), the Chinese zodiac hours: each is ruled by its own earthly branch, while the heavenly stem of the period depends on the stem of the day. The calculator finds the energy of any hour, and the table below shows the whole system at once.
Hour stem table
The hour stem depends on the group the day's heavenly stem falls into: KD, LB, FA, EG or CH.
Where the energy of the hour is used
The five day groups — KD, LB, FA, EG and CH — bring days together by their heavenly stem; within a group, the hour stems follow the same sequence. Find the group of your day and the row for the current time: where they cross is the stem of the hour, and the branch is given in the same row.
