The fifth arcanum is the mirror of the second, only along the male line. A father who did not acknowledge, who left, who did not protect, who gave no support; or a son who struck his father out.
The descendant inherits this as the absence of firm ground underfoot. The men of the lineage do not stay; authority provokes not respect but irritation or fear; a person either looks for someone to decide for them or refuses on principle to take help from anyone. Relations with their own father are often described in the words "it was as though he was not there", even if formally he was.
The working-off is to restore the paternal line: to find out who one's kin on the father's side are, to bring back contact where it broke off through no ill will. And to become oneself the support that was missing: to keep one's word to those who are younger, to protect them, and not to disappear at a hard moment.
