The third task is to raise someone and bring them to independence. The direct reading is children: not merely to give birth, but to see them through to a profession and to the ability to live by their own means.
Pupils and wards count as the same thing: someone the person took on to teach and brought up to a level. How a child came into the family — born, adopted, arrived with a second marriage — does not change the task.
The second channel is production. The three is responsible for making: not "bought it and resold it" but "took it and made it". Hence the professions that involve a manufacturing cycle, and the management of such processes.
What both readings have in common: something must come into being that would not exist without this person, and it must grow until it stands on its own.
