The first arcanum produces a person who goes on learning all their life. They are curious about how everything is put together, and they set about working it out for themselves rather than waiting to be told.

This is an age, not merely a cast of mind: such people stay young in manner longer than others — they connect easily, take up new things easily, change occupation easily. With their contemporaries they are on equal terms at any age.

The strength here is the ability to master the unfamiliar quickly and to join together what other people keep apart. The weakness is scattering: the interest flares up and dies down before the job has been carried through.

The first arcanum comes into its own where one has to keep learning something new and explaining it to others.

Day arcanum — character

Day arcanum = DT

The day of birth is the main part of the date. It is responsible for character and for what childhood was like, and along with that — for the past incarnation and for what a person brings out of it: inclinations, a craft, an attitude to work.

It is read as a general frame — much the way a zodiac sign is read in astrology: it describes a tendency, not the whole person. Character is made up of many numbers, and no one of them cancels out the rest.

The same arcanum can come from different days: for those born on the 1st and on the 23rd it coincides (23 − 22 = 1), but their ruling planets are different, and that shows in the character.

This is the positive part of the calculation — what a person starts from and can lean on, not a list of their limitations.
