Betrayal of the lineage

The twentieth arcanum is about renouncing one's own. Disowning parents, the family name, one's origin; leaving the family at a moment that was hard for it; testifying against a relative.

In the generations that follow this reads as loneliness among one's own family. The ties formally exist but give no support; relatives scatter across the country and across old grievances; a person decides early that they can rely only on themselves, and takes that for strength.

The working-off is to come back to one's own. To restore contact where it broke off over an old quarrel; to find out and to name by name those who came before you; to be there when relatives are having a hard time, even if the relations have long been anything but warm. The law closes through presence, not through reconciliation in words.
