The fourteenth arcanum is about an occupation cut short. A mastery that existed and was not passed on; a household ruined by someone else's will or by one's own carelessness; a hereditary trade dropped by the generation that decided it was out of fashion.
A descendant recognises this by never finding what is truly theirs. The abilities are there, but they do not assemble into a profession; the person changes occupations, each time stopping just short of mastery; the money comes from anything at all except the thing they genuinely know how to do.
The working-off is to bring a craft back. Sometimes literally the one practised in the lineage, but more often any craft at all, carried through to a real level and passed on further. The key word here is "carried through": the law closes not through the choice of an occupation but through the depth to which a person has gone into it.
